Cane River Colony was a colony
founded by Marie
Theresa "CoinCoin," a former African slave and the children of her
relationship with Claude Thomas Pierre Metoyer, a Frenchman,
on Isle Brevelle just south of Natchitoches in
central Louisiana. The family names of the spouses who married into the
Metoyer family and became part of the colony are listed on this site on
the "Colonist Names"
page.

Family & Friends:
Here is the
design of the gold trim, commemorative plate for 150 Parish Anniversary
celebrations on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 14th at St.
Augustine’s… Plates will be available for $20 at St. Augustine
Catholic Church.
The concept was
graphical designed by china company artists in Pennsylvania. The
concept included having the image of the original wood crucifix centered
between the two church images (linking them in time and spirit), and
having the image of Grandpere, welcoming all to the parish church (as he
willed)……
Plate images
were created from photos I took of the current church and crucifix.
The graphic image of Grandpere was created from a photo of the portrait by
Philip Gould. Much appreciation to Philip Gould for sharing his
photo!

Louisiana Creole
Research Association, Inc. Announces Its Third Annual Conference
The Louisiana Creole Research Association (LA Creole) is a New
Orleans-based, non-profit genealogy and family research organization with
more than 200 members across the nation. It was founded in August of 2004
for the purpose of assisting Creoles in researching their ancestry,
educating the general public about the Creole culture, and celebrating the
contributions and legacy of a "forgotten" people. Creoles as defined here
are the offspring of European, African, and/or Native American settlers in
colonial Louisiana.
In keeping with its purpose, LA Creole will be hosting its 3rd Annual
Conference on September 22-23 at the Chateau Sonesta Hotel, 800 Iberville
Street, New Orleans, LA. The theme of this year's conference is:
Louisiana Creoles of Color: Inspiration, Admiration, and Race Relations.
The conference agenda will consist of speakers, panel discussion,
exhibits, vendors, and a Sunday Jazz Brunch (Brunch seating is limited).
The conference will include a wide range of topics. Local historian Keith
Weldon Medley will present a session on Plessy, Ferguson and the Comite
des Citoyens along with the descendants of Homer Plessy and John Ferguson,
the litigants in the famous 1896 Supreme Court case. A.P. Tureaud Jr. will
discuss his experiences as the first undergraduate of color at LSU. There
will be panel discussions on the historic building trades of New Orleans
and on Culture, Identity and Race Relations.
Conference registration will include all of the above events on Saturday,
except the Sunday Jazz Brunch which requires separate reservations as
seating is limited.

Our Lady of Victory / The Saga of an African-American Catholic Community
Our
Lady of Victory: The Saga of an African-American Catholic Community
takes you on a fascinating journey down memory lane with the early
pioneers.
Get to know the Knights and Ladies of St. Peter Claver. Learn about the
cement wall that was built to separate blacks from white residents and how
it almost impeded the development of the area. Learn about a Catholic
Community about to take root and how Church policies failed this ambitious
initiative.
The author's recollections are recalled about growing up in the lagacy
of Mother Anna Bates. She was surprised to learn that the Knights of St.
Peter Claver organization had such a continuing presence in her church
through her research of the early pioneers.
This book has been a buzz around Shirley's Detroit Community from the
time she started writing it. At last, a book that provides a voice for
black catholics. This is a celebration of black history. Eaton Metoyer is
mentioned in this book

The Louisiana Creole Heritage Center's Family Database is Now Online
We
invite & encourage everyone to register their data into this
extensive and searchable database. We foresee it as a great tool for
individuals researching their family history. We visited the site and were
amazed at the dedication and work that is being expended to make this
database a one of a kind resource. Of course, you have the option of
requesting forms from the center to submit data manually if you do
not care to submit on-line. So, if you are sincere about preserving your
heritage, I suggest you accomplish this task as soon as possible.

CREOLE NAMES ON
STARDUST SPACECRAFT
I stumbled across this site
and found that my brother's name was listed on the the microchip of the
StarDust spacecraft that was sent to rendezvous with a comet. I also found
a few other names. If you would like to see if your name is on the list
click here to visit NASA's site:
http://stardust.jpl.nasa.gov/overview/microchip/index.html
The microchips are in
outer space onboard the STARDUST spacecraft.
STARDUST was
launched on February 7, 1999
carrying the two sets of microchips. Two copies of each chip were
installed on the spacecraft (for a total of four chips). One set of
microchips is mounted inside the Sample Return Capsule, and will return
back to Earth with the capsule in the year 2006. The other set of
chips is mounted in the spacecraft body and will remain in space forever.
